U.S. pipeline regulator seeks to toughen rules for detecting methane leaks (NYSEARCA:XLU)

The U.S. pipeline regulator has unveiled new guidelines aimed toward decreasing leaks of methane from the community of two.7M miles of pure fuel pipelines within the U.S. that would get rid of 1M metric tons of methane emissions by 2030, the equal of emissions from 5.6M vehicles.

The proposal issued Friday by the Transportation Division’s Pipeline and Hazardous Supplies Security Administration would “considerably enhance the detection and restore of leaks from fuel pipelines… deploy pipeline employees throughout the nation to maintain extra product within the pipe, and forestall harmful accidents.”

The company stated the brand new rule would cut back emissions from lined pipelines as a lot as 55% by requiring pipeline operators to determine superior leak detection applications aimed toward detecting and repairing “all” fuel leaks by strengthening leakage survey and patrolling necessities utilizing know-how akin to aerial or car surveys, optical fuel imaging cameras, and steady monitoring methods.
