Microsoft mentioned Wednesday that it has launched nearly all of its emoji designs to GitHub and Figma, permitting anybody to tweak and design their very own.

Microsoft isn’t saying that you simply’ll have the ability to use your personal emoji designs inside Home windows, and the corporate isn’t saying that completely the entire firm’s emoji are being launched into open supply, both. Particularly, Microsoft is excluding the Clippy emoji (boo!) and some that features the Microsoft brand. Naturally, Microsoft can’t launch its personal copyrighted emblems into the general public area, Jon Friedman, a company vice chairman of design and analysis at Microsoft, wrote in a weblog put up.

It’s no small job to open-source every of Microsoft’s 1,538 emoji, Friedman wrote. “Much like how typeface units embrace daring, italic, and common types, emoji should exist as a SVG, PNG, and JPG file to permit for true versatility. And for every of these, a vector, flat, and monochrome model must be created for scale and suppleness.”

“Our creator neighborhood is infinitely imaginative, and we will’t wait to see the way you break boundaries, remix our designs, and take the Fluent emoji to locations we will’t foresee,” Friedman mentioned.
